Ok, so I've learned some things since I wrote that piece above.

What have I learned? Humans aren't the only living entities with momentum and inertia. There are other systems that have their own direction and momentum.

For example - weather patterns. If you are looking for a good day fishing and it rains, is that your 'fault'? Did you fail to control your environment?

Of course not, and thinking it was your creation is a part of the narcissistic thinking at the root of the self-help movement espoused by books such as "The Secret". It's a load of hogwash.

You do have control over certain aspects of your life, but not all of them. You don't decide when the sun comes up or what other people are going to do. You can have some effect on other people (and this is where perception and communication skills come in), but you can't control everything.

So there's my rant to balance my previous statement.
